Freedom and Jeff
Here's a story that was passed along to me, and I want to share it here because it's not only about a disabled animal, it's also about the same theme as Almost Perfect: how damaged animals can not only inspire, but also help heal humans who take the time -- take the risk -- to open their hearts to these magnificent creatures. If this isn't the ultimate illustration of how karma works, then I

Tribute to an Almost Mom
Here's a beautiful and touching vid about Terry Albert. She wrote and narrates a poem, I Never Was a Mother, that expresses her love for animals and why she -- and so many others like her -- rescue homeless pets. It's clear from the photos in this vid that some of these animals are disabled, at least temporarily. Though Terry may never have been a mother, she certainly shows all the signs and

Maggie and Mitch - Because I Need Some Sanity
Okay, I admit it: I'm posting this solely because I need to add some sanity to the world. In the last hour, I've read about the unexpectedly steep increase in the melting of the polar ice caps; another mass shooting by some guy who lost his job; a little girl who disappeared from her home neighborhood; and now North Korea has launched a rocket and no one knows exactly why or what's on it.You know

Okay, a break from the heavy stuff that sometimes characterizes this space. I have no other reason for posting this pic than that I think it is adorable and wanted to share it:Cats are notorious for squeezing themselves into spaces that can barely accommodate them, but apparently their canine companions share this penchant. At least one of them, anyway. Enjoy! And if you'd like to see more

A Deeper Connection With Animals
My friend and colleague, Dawn Baumann Brunke, is an accomplished writer and soul seeker. We've collaborated on a series of middle grade coloring books called Who Lives Here?, which I'm looking into having re-published. Meanwhile. Dawn's been exploring how humans can connect on a deeper level with animals through her "Animal Voices" book series. Some of the material delves into dealing with

Yes, sometimes it's actually funny.
Most of us who were raised with any manners at all were taught not to laugh at those who are different. And disability is not often funny. But in this case, you can hardly keep from laughing.Monster the Cat has a vocal cord condition that makes it sound like he's singing when he yawns, and, well...it's funny! And since he's not suffering at all, you don't have to feel bad laughing. Take a look

Help for People With Special Needs Pets
Caring for pets with special needs does not have to be a burden. It can be a richly rewarding experience, as shown in our book Almost Perfect: Disabled Pets and the People Who Love Them. Just for Fun
Okay, this post has absolutely nothing to do with disabled pets. I just had to post it because it cracks me up and I thought it would be a fun way to start out the New Year.
